Cotton or Polyester Saddle Pads? What is Really Better for Your Horse?

Kevin Achilles

Why cotton is the better choice for saddle pads

Which material is right for your horse's saddle pad? The answer is anything but trivial: The choice of material affects your horse's comfort, the product's durability, and not least its environmental impact. In this article, we explain why we at Die Reitdecke consciously choose cotton saddle pads – and what specific advantages this has compared to polyester.

1. Cotton vs. Polyester: What lies behind the materials?

Cotton – a natural raw material

Cotton is a plant-based natural fiber obtained from the seed coat of the cotton plant. As a natural fiber, it is biodegradable and has been used in textiles for centuries.

Polyester – a synthetic fiber

Polyester, on the other hand, is made from chemically produced polymers (mostly PET) derived from petroleum. This makes polyester one of the most common fibers in the clothing and textile industry, especially in inexpensive mass products.

2. Breathability & sweat management in saddle pads – why this is important for your horse

Why cotton breathes better

Cotton has a more open fiber structure that allows air and moisture to circulate better. This enables absorbed moisture to be released to the environment more quickly, increasing comfort and skin compatibility for your horse.

Sweat absorption vs. moisture wicking

In comparison:

– Cotton can absorb significantly more moisture and feels pleasant even when damp. It keeps the horse's body temperature more stable and supports a natural heat balance.

– Polyester is hydrophobic and directs moisture to the surface, where it evaporates more quickly. This can lead to heat buildup under the saddle with intensive use.

For everyday use at the riding facility, this means: Cotton saddle pads support a natural moisture and temperature balance, which can reduce heat buildup and chafing under the saddle.

3. Comfort for horse & rider: Why cotton saddle pads are the more skin-friendly choice

Cotton is naturally:

– soft, hypoallergenic, and skin-friendly, which is an advantage for sensitive horse skin.

– breathable, which contributes to better ventilation under the saddle.

– temperature-regulating, which ensures a pleasant microclimate under the saddle equipment in both summer and winter.

Polyester, on the other hand, can feel warmer and more synthetic with prolonged contact and restricts air movement and temperature regulation more.

4. Sustainability in saddle pads: Cotton vs. Polyester in environmental comparison

Cotton – natural origin and biological decomposition

Cotton is primarily made of cellulose – a natural polymer of plant origin. Scientific studies on the biodegradability of textiles show that cotton fabric decomposes significantly faster under natural conditions than polyester fabrics, which remain structurally largely stable even after prolonged exposure.1

A published biodegradation study on cotton and polyester found that cotton materials decompose significantly faster in soil and compost environments, while polyester fibers remain largely unchanged over long periods.1

For the life cycle of a saddle pad, this means: At the end of its useful life, a natural material like cotton leaves no persistent plastic residues.

Polyester – Microplastics and Persistence

Polyester is a synthetic polymer based on petroleum and is not biodegradable. Each wash cycle of a polyester textile can release thousands of synthetic microfibers that enter water bodies and remain there for decades. A life-cycle assessment analysis of natural and synthetic fibers also shows that polyester, particularly in the categories of fossil resource depletion and environmental toxicity, has higher impact values than natural cellulose fibers like cotton.3

Thus, the choice of materials is not only a matter of function but also of long-term ecological responsibility.

5. Transparently produced: Weaving & Dyeing in Germany

The production of textiles often takes place in global supply chains with complex production structures. Amnesty International documents in recent reports systematic problems such as inadequate wages, restricted union freedom, and unsafe working conditions in parts of the international textile industry, including in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.2

We are aware: Cotton does not grow in Germany either. We cannot control the raw material chain from the ground up – but we can start where we can. That’s why we have our saddle pads woven and dyed in Germany: with shorter supply chains, EU-compliant working conditions, and traceable production steps – a conscious counter-design to anonymous mass production.

6. Durability and Value – A good saddle pad is an investment

High-quality cotton products can – with proper care – be used for many years. Cotton fabric retains its shape, becomes pleasantly softer over time, and remains structurally stable – a quality feature often lacking in synthetic fabrics.

Sustainability arises not only from the raw material but also from durability and conscious consumption.

7. Conclusion – Our Recommendation: Cotton Saddle Pads for Horses, Riders, and the Environment

Criterion Cotton Polyester
Breathability ★★★★☆ ★★☆☆☆
Moisture Absorption ★★★★☆ ★★★☆☆
Skin Friendliness ★★★★☆ ★★☆☆☆
Environmental Friendliness ★★★★☆ ★☆☆☆☆
Regional Production (DE) ★★★★★ ★☆☆☆☆
Durability (with proper care) ★★★★☆ ★★★★★

Cotton saddle pads impress in everyday use with horses in every way: They are breathable, skin-friendly, durable, and – thanks to regional processing – significantly more sustainable than polyester products. No compromise between comfort and responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cotton Saddle Pads (FAQ)

Are cotton saddle pads easier to care for than polyester saddle pads?
Cotton saddle pads can usually be washed at 30–60 °C. Since cotton does not release synthetic microfibers, it is also more environmentally friendly when washed. Polyester dries faster but may lose shape at higher temperatures.

Are cotton saddle pads suitable for all horses?
Yes – especially for horses with sensitive skin or a tendency to rub, cotton saddle pads are ideal, as cotton is hypoallergenic and supports natural temperature regulation.

What does "woven in Germany" mean?
Our saddle pads are woven and dyed in a German weaving mill according to our specifications. This means shorter delivery routes, controlled quality, and EU-compliant working conditions – from thread tension to color.
